Development of Chiral Molecular Metal Chains

Downsizing metal materials, used in a variety of electronic devices, into nano-structured molecules is one of the important subjects in terms of saving energy and resources. We have developed molecular metallic wires by incremental expansion of linearly constrained metal-metal bonded transition metal clusters supported by polyphosphine ligands. On the basis of our studies, we intend in this project to construct chiral palladium wires through chiral recognition and self-alignment of linear Pd4 units supported by chiral tetraphosphine, rac-dpmppm, and to establish chiral switch of Pd8 chains supported by achiral tetraphosphine, meso-dpmppm, which should be induced by chiral terminal ligands. New chiral tetraphosphines are also planned to be designed and are applied to the syntheses of chiral metallic wires and clusters with an aim of developing new functional materials stemmed from their chiral properties and reactions. The present strategy will be applied to other transition metals including Pt, Au, Ag, Cu, Ir, Rh, and so on.
