Research Project Development of “Bifacial Polymer” Featuring Unique Asymmetric Coordination Ability
Abstract Generally, polymers are linked by a single chemical bond along the main chain, and regarded as a “string-like” substance.  On the other hand, ladder polymers having two or more bonds along the main chain can be regarded as a “tape-like” substance with a certain “face”. In this context, we designed “bifacial polymer” having different faces with different properties on both sides.  Such bifacial polymers may function as a scaffold for asymmetric assembly of various guests. Recently, our group reported the synthetic method of ladder polymers featuring flexible conformational change  (F. Ishiwari et al., ACS Macro Lett. 2017, 6, 775).  In this work, based on our methodology for the synthesis of flexible ladder polymers, we will develop bifacial polymers and explore their asymmetry function arising from the unique asymmetric coordination ability.
